CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS IN CATALONIA

Tio de Nadal or Caga Tió
A log, painted with a smiley face and cared for from after El Dia de Inmaculada, which is December 8. Then, either on Christmas Day or Christmas Eve (it varies), the children beat the log and sing songs enticing it to 'shit some presents'.

Caganer
A little porcelain gnome-like figure with his trousers down, defecating somewhere in the nativity scene. Children enjoy looking for the little guy, who is often hidden. Caganer has been offering his unique presents to the nativity scene since at least the middle of the 18th or 19th century.

The Three Wise Kings
The 5th January the 3 Magic Kings from the far East arrive to Spain and give all kids presents. We organize parades in the evening, in which the kings and their servants throw caramels to the children (and parents) in attendance. After that they visit us in our houses and give our presents..
To ask the Magic Kings what we want we write a letter and send it over to them the 1st January through their servants.
The next day, Epiphany, we eat an special cake. We called it “Tortell de reis”. In the cake we can find a bean and a small king. If you find the bean you have to pay that cake the next year, and if you find a king you have to put a crown all the day.

Fum, fum, fum

El vint-i-cinc de desembre,
FUM, FUM, FUM (2)
ha nascut un minyonet
ros i blanquet, ros i blanquet;
fill de la Verge Maria,
és nat en una establia,
FUM, FUM, FUM.

Allí dalt de la muntanya,
FUM, FUM, FUM (2)
si n'hi ha dos pastorets,
abrigadets, abrigadets,
amb la pell i la samarra,
mengen ous i butifarra,
FUM, FUM, FUM.

Qui en dirà més gran mentida?
FUM, FUM, FUM (2)
ja repon el majoral,
amb gran cabal, amb gran cabal,
jo faré deu mil camades
amb un salt totes plegades,
FUM, FUM, FUM.

Déu ens doni santes festes,
FUM, FUM, FUM (2),
faci fred, facil calor,
serà el millor, serà el millor,
de Jesús fer gran memòria
perquè ens vulgui dalt la Glòria,
FUM, FUM, FUM.
